Orthopaedic medical mission to Gaza

In October 2010, the Towards Hope Foundation was privileged to work with the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) in sending a surgical team to the Gaza Strip.

The team of four consisted of an Orthopaedic Surgeon, a Theatre Nurse and a Physiotherapist (from Australia), and an Anaesthetist (from Italy).

The purpose of the mission was to provide surgical services for various ongoing injuries, particularly knee reconstruction and rehabilitation, combined with training to enable the local Palestinian medical staff to continue such work.  The team worked at the European Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip for some 8-9 days.

“We were busy with two clinics for the week seeing 200 patients mainly with knee problems. We did approximately 20 arthroscopic surgeries of the knee, including some ACL reconstructions, which our Palestinian colleagues were very excited to do as no one apparently is doing these in Gaza. By and large the theatres are well equipped and the staff friendly and keen to help.” – Tim, Orthopaedic Surgeon.

“It was worthwhile as the physios have now learnt how to recognize and treat those patients who arrive with anterior /patello-femoral knee pain of which there are many in the general population – as long as they are referred to them. They now also have some advice and exercises/ strategies to deal with incontinence problems and perhaps now they will be encouraged to teach their low back pain patients some core stability exercises.” – Jacquie, Physiotherapist.

We are very happy to have been able to help out in this small project. We hope it will be the first of many cooperative ventures with PCRF in the future.
